Developers hoping to build a new casino and Racing Track in Reading have been given an extension.

The stadium will house the Reading Racers speedway team and a greyhound track.

The old home of Reading Racers and greyhound racing, Smallmead, was demolished in 2008, after being the home of racing and speedway in Reading since 1975.  The “Racino” plan was due to be ready this year (2010), but has stalled.

Gaming International, the developers of the “Racino” should have started work by June but now has until March to start building with speedway fans hoping Speedway can return by 2012.

Racino is an American term for a casino and racing track.  The Stadium would come complete with a 538-space car park and free-standing kennels.

What Wharf Land Investments, Site development managers have to say:

The re-development plans for the former Hewlett Packard site in Reading are progressing well. Demolition of the former Hewlett Packard premises has now been completed and the site is completely clear pending re-development.

The sites development manager Wharf Land Investments are currently in the process of exploring possible end uses for the site. This process will include the submission of an outline planning application for a B8 storage and distribution scheme, while consultation with Reading Borough Council on the LDF process continues to explore the possibility of providing a more comprehensive mix of regeneration uses on the site to meet local needs.

Wharf Land Investments Ltd recognises the desire for Reading to be awarded city status and therefore hopes that to support this process by working with Reading Borough Council to create something innovative and exciting at this gateway site into Reading . The future of the site is made more exciting by the plans for Green Park Station, the soon to be completed improved Junction 11, the park-and-ride plans and the mass rapid transport.

Our proposals will lead to jobs, at both the construction phase and once the development is completed. Whilst we hope that our proposals will be of benefit to people in the vicinity. Further details can be found at www.wortongrange.org.
